Hamilton City in New Zealand achieved major international recognition during 2014 with several key accolades from international travel writers including a prestigious award for the beautiful Hamilton Gardens.

 

Hamilton-based accommodation provider Aspen Manor Motel is certainly the perfect place to base yourself when you visit the city. It is located in Hamilton’s leafy “east side” which is within a close driving distance for most of Hamilton’s award-winning activities notably Hamilton Gardens.

 

Earlier this year Hamilton Gardens was named the 2014 International Garden of the Year by the International Garden Tourism Network. Then The Telegraph named Hamilton Gardens as one of 26 reasons why New Zealand is the world’s top travel destination.

 

Set amongst 58 hectares, Hamilton Gardens is made up of 18 beautifully landscapes gardens fitting into five different collections: Paradise, Productive, Fantasy, Cultivar and Landscape.

 

Hamilton Gardens’ concept of tracing The Story of Gardens through different civilisations and time is considered internationally unique. This concept was recognised by award juror Michel Gauthier, who said the award from industry peers indicated Hamilton Gardens was “a leading example of integrating quality garden experiences to the tourism industry”.

Four gardens from around the world were considered for this unique award, with garden tourism expert Dr Richard Benfield nominating Hamilton Gardens. Following his visit in 2013 the American scholar said Hamilton Gardens’ concept of telling The Story of Gardens is unique in the world and visually spectacular. “The concept is, by far, the most exciting I have seen in my 20-year career as a researcher in the field of garden tourism,” he says.

 

Just down the road from Aspen Manor Motel is Hamilton’s premiere entertainment centre, Claudelands Event Centre.

 

The Claudelands Event Centre proudly received two top venue awards at the Entertainment Venues Association of New Zealand (EVANZ) Awards this year.

 

Claudelands won the Supreme Venue of the Year Award, and Large Venue of the Year category, celebrating venues of 5000 seats or larger.

 

Since opening in June 2011 Claudelands has become one of New Zealand’s leading conference and exhibition centres, and entertainment arenas.

 

High-profile arena events held at Claudelands this year have included Bob Dylan, Billy Connolly and Disney On Ice. In 2015, the venue will host performances by Kenny Rogers, Slash, Eddie Izzard and Ricky Martin.
