The public will be invited to attend an open day from 11:00am to 3.30pm on Wednesday 3 August at Hamilton East Village, to find out more about the draft Hamilton East Neighbourhood Plan.
The draft plan, which includes a new playground, improved river access and an avenue of cherry trees for Hamilton East, will be open for members of the public to have their say from Friday 22 July through to Thursday 11 August.
Lornae Lowe, owner of Hamilton East’s Aspen Manor Motel on Grey Street, says she welcomes the proposed improvements.
“Hamilton East is already a beautiful and historic suburb of Hamilton,” says Lornae. “The council has done a great job of maintaining the history and beauty of this area and I’m sure the proposed plans will fit in well.”
Hamilton East is Hamilton’s oldest suburb and is characterised by historic villas built in the early 20th Century. Many of the streets are named after famous figures of the New Zealand Land Wars, such as Governor George Grey and Maori chief Te Awaitaia, who went by the name William Naylor after converting to Christianity.
The Hamilton East Neighbourhood Plan is a key project identified in the greater Hamilton Plan to highlight Hamilton’s distinctive suburban villages.
Hamilton City Council’s General Manager for Strategy and Communication, Sean Hickey, says the plan aims to embrace Hamilton East’s history.
“It’s great to see the development of this plan which provides a clear vision to refresh and enhance the character and features of our city’s oldest suburb,” says Mr Hickey.
“Hamilton East’s central location makes it a popular and much loved suburb with close connections to the river, central city and Hamilton Gardens.”
Aspen Manor Motel is right in the heart of Hamilton East, on Grey Street, close to the popular shops and cafes of Hamilton East and within easy commute to Hamilton City.
