Free Things to do in the School Holidays

There are lots of things to do with the kids in Hamilton during the April school holidays that won’t cost you the earth – in fact, plenty of them are free!

 

Lornae Lowe of Aspen Manor Motel on Grey Street, Hamilton, says she expects plenty of families over the holidays, since the motel is in a great position.

 

“Aspen Manor Motel is located centrally, with very handy access to Hamilton’s many attractions as well as being easy for people to get out of town,” says Lornae.

 

The Hamilton & Waikato region has a number of walking and hiking tracks suitable for all levels of fitness and ability:

 

The Kauri Loop walk in the Hakarimata ranges off Hakarimata Road, North of Ngaruawahia, allows visitors to get up close with ancient Kauri trees.

 

The Arapuni Swing Bridge in Arapuni Village, South Waikato, has views of a bush-lined gorge and the Waikato River 152m below.

 

The Blue Spring (Te Waihou) Walkway, on Leslie Road, South Waikato, has water so pure they bottle it.

 

Many more walkways can be found in the area and Lornae says she’s happy to supply information and point her guests in the right direction.

 

Lornae says a visit to Hamilton is not complete without seeing the famous Hamilton Gardens.

 

“You can’t go past the Hamilton Gardens,” says Lornae. “They’re literally just down the road from the motel.”

 

The internationally acclaimed Hamilton Gardens was the recipient of the prestigious International Garden of the Year award in 2014.

 

Hamilton Gardens has five garden collections with 21 themed gardens which attract more than one million visitors per year.

 

“You can spend a whole day exploring the gardens,” says Lornae, “and of course, they’re free.”
